Open Thread: Book Recommendations

One of our readers, Son of Maurice (I don’t think he actually is, but who knows?) is having the most “Blazers” of medical procedures, knee surgery. Since he will be laid up for a bit, he asked our readers for fresh book recommendations.

With that said, what books or authors do you all recommend? Things that have spoken to me the last few years include: Murakami, Kazuo Ishiguro, Ursula K LeGuin, the Lord of the Rings, and Ted Chiang’s short stories. I’ve very much been on a sci-fi/fantasy and magical realism type of run, as you can see, but I don’t feel limited to that.
